(AD) Dad Jokes and Free Beers

Forgive the terrible pic, its a picture of a picture and the only one I can lay my hands on right now but it’s me and my dad and there wont be any more of those so I am cherishing the ones I do have.

I’ve been quietly tiptoeing around Father’s Day this year.

It’s the first one without my dad, and I wasn’t sure how I’d feel about seeing the cards in the shops or the restaurant promos in my inbox. I’ve been ducking the whole thing, if I’m honest. Deleting every email that lands and swiping up on ads on Instagram whilst mumbling under my breath.

But then something made me pause, it was a message from Prezzo about their Father’s Day offer this Sunday centering around dad jokes. They’re giving a free pint of Poretti beer to dads, grandads and stepdads who visit and if they tell their favourite dad joke to their server ALL their drinks will be free. (obviously there are Ts and Cs, and you can read them here)

And it made me smile and remember him laughing.

Because my dad loved a good (bad) joke. He was never without one, and he laughed at mine even harder. When I was about eleven, I told him one that genuinely made him howl:

“How do you get a peanut out of your ear?”

“Pour in chocolate — and it comes out a Treat.”

He worked for Mars who manufactured Treats so it struck a chord and falls a bit flat now that most people under 30 have no idea what a Treat is anymore.

I don’t know what’s worse — the pun or the fact I remember it so clearly decades later.

He loved it. And not long after, I found myself in a restaurant, standing up between tables, delivering a string of silly jokes to an entire room of strangers. Not that I remember any of this but my mum and dad have talked about it several times since, using the term “held court” as a precocious kid making a room of strangers laugh.

We already know that Prezzo is the home of great pizza and pasta, has a gluten free menu that think is unrivalled and if you download their app gives you all sorts of incentives and offers (hello free Nutella doughnuts). So this latest offer sounds lovely and if you haven’t booked somewhere to go yet then your local Prezzo should definitely be on your radar.

So even though I’m not sure I’ll manage a big celebration this year, I will raise a glass. And if you’re lucky enough to be spending Sunday with a dad in your life, tell the joke, enjoy the beer, and make the memory.

And if you fancy a meal out, Prezzo will treat your dad to a beer — all he needs is a half-decent punchline.
