As we bid farewell to 2023 and embrace the possibilities that a new year holds, it’s only fitting to take a moment to reflect on the journey we’ve navigated over the past twelve months. I wasn’t going to write a post like this because despite over 15,000 taken last year when I think about it I dont think we did, or achieved an awful lot. 2023, for our family, was a rollercoaster of emotions, filled with some lovely weekends away, memorable trips to Guernsey, and the triumph of overcoming challenges that tested our resilience and unity.
One of the highlights of the year was time spent with our grandaughter who turned three and brings us more joy than I can possibly put into words. Afternoon with her, her parents and our family all here doing nothing other than hanging out playing games and eating are my favourites. During our weekends away exploring England, we sought solace in the embrace of nature, old buildings and each other’s company. All of it with copious amounts of tea. Escaping the hustle and bustle of daily life, trying to get out each weekend brought us a renewed sense of appreciation for the simple joys of life. Again with tea or the occasional fishfinger sandwich.
Guernsey, with its picturesque landscapes and rich history, became a frequent destination for us in 2023. The island’s charm captivated our hearts during a couple of unforgettable trips, one with Bruce’s mum who had never been there before. I am not joking when I say that after hearing that a week after we had returned from our own trip I had booked another for the three of us the following month. Strolling through the cobbled streets of St. Peter Port, we immersed ourselves in the island’s unique blend of French and British influences and introduced Pat to all our favourite places out there and came away with wonderful memories. I then made a third trip on my own to stay with a friend launching her own business, a lovely long girls weekend that I treasured.
We were also treated to a fabulous weekend in France with my parents learning more about the Burgundy region, the history of the area and the incredible wines it produces. It ended with the most spectacular gala dinner in Chateau du Clos de Vougeot. An excuse to put on our posh frocks and bow ties having the best time.
However, amidst the laughter and joy, 2023 also presented its fair share of challenges. Life has a way of throwing unexpected curveballs, and we found ourselves facing moments that tested our strength and resilience. It was during these times that the true strength of our family bond became apparent. Together, we weathered the storms, supporting each other with unwavering love and understanding and knowing that when we said “I am here if you need anything” we all truly meant it.
The struggles I encountered were not only external but also internal, as I navigated personal growth and self-discovery and tried to make more sense of my place in the world. I learned that it’s not the absence of difficulties that defines a family but rather how they come together to overcome them and I am in awe at the strength we have all shown.
In retrospect, 2023 was a year of growth, love, and learning for our family. The weekends away and trips to Guernsey and France served as reminders of the importance of cherishing moments with our loved ones and finding solace in the beauty of the world around us. The challenges we faced only strengthened our bond, teaching us that unity and resilience are the cornerstones of a thriving family.
As we step into the new year, we carry with us the lessons learned and the memories forged in 2023. With hearts full of gratitude and optimism, we look forward to embracing the adventures, joys, and challenges that 2024 has in store for our family.
