The Gallery — Buildings

. You know when you read something in French and then you translate it and you think “well that can’t be right” so you do a Google translate on it to check on your rusty school French?   And then it comes up with the same thing as you just thought?  So you then think the website owner must have made a mistake? And then you wonder if this is

The ‘Money Can’t Buy’ London Weekend

Ok, so just about everything on this weekend could be bought, so the title isn’t strictly speaking true, but….. Caity was 21 this month, and that gave us a bit of a (lovely) problem – what do you get a 21 year old these days? She’s moved in with her (also lovely) boyfriend so there aren’t really day to day things that she needs these days.  Anything spotted online or whilst out

Camp Bestival, here we come — [AD]

.Camp Bestival We have been on tenterhooks for the past few months as we have waited to hear if we are going to be amongst the bloggers chosen to be Official Camp Bestival bloggers.   At 5.30pm on Friday night we heard we were.  News that makes me squeal, which is surprising really as I really don’t do festivals.  Or indeed camping.   But in an effort to get out

Planning a Roadtrip With Bridgestone

. Roadtrip! Planning is well underway for the Summer holiday. The ferry’s booked, currency ordered, passports located and guide book read from cover to cover. Okay, T picked up the guide book during the ad break in Corrie, but that counts I think, doesn’t it? We’re doing another road trip to a currently secret destination. If it’s half as lovely as the gite we shared with old friends last summer,

The Gallery — Colours

.   It was a stunning picture by Annie that prompted Tara to pick colour as the theme for the gallery this week. A field of rapeseed down in Somerset last week, and it really is the most glorious picture: And it reminded me of the one at the top that I took in Holland, possibly even at the same time.  How spooky would that be, so in tune as

Canvas Holidays Duinrell — the verdict

. Hosted trip As you are aware for Easter this year we were lucky enough to stay with Canvas Holidays on their Dutch site at Duinrell as part of their #Canvas50 celebrations.  I didn’t know much about the site, but it seems plenty of people on Twitter and Facebook do and they all told me how fantastic it is, and the perfect base for a family holiday.   It turns

An invite to a Buckingham Palace

invite to a Buckingham Palace Garden Party. Traditionally of course posh invitations land with a thud on the door mat.   At Barrow Towers though we don’t do things the traditional way. Which is why on Friday morning as I was making doner kebabs (I know, I have no idea why either but it seemed like a good idea at the time and actually they were quite tasty, anyway I

Volendam

Volendam is a tiny town on the map and one you might not notice or pay much attention to.  Yes it’s on the coast, but so much of Holland is.  And if you want towns buzzing with life, well there is Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague and smaller towns too.   Nothing much would make Vollendam stand out from the crowd.  Which is a shame really because it is beautiful.

Seeing flower fields in Holland

. As soon as we decided to come to Holland in April I also decided we had to see some of the iconic flower fields you hear so much about.  And see in stunning photos and postcards.   You know the ones,  row upon row of flowers, banked by colour, for as far as the eye can see stretching out before you. I was hoping we would get to see tulips

My tips for a European Road Trip

. By lunchtime on Easter Saturday we had driven through four countries.  Well the first one, England, probably shouldn’t count, but France, Belgium and Holland definitely do.   And it struck me that driving through European to a destination shouldn’t be the sole purpose of the journey. It was mine when I first saw that our destination of Wassenaar was 240 miles from Calais.  In my head that translated as

Top 5 must see things in South Africa

. They say that Africa gets under your skin. I don’t know who “they” actually are but “they are right.   I have been lucky enough to go to Africa three times now with Comic Relief, although flying visits to Tanzania, Ghana and Kenya it has left me with a real taste for the continent.  And I want to see more of it.   I want a holiday in Africa because

Memories from Germany

. Sometimes things come back to you – fleeting memories that make you smile.  I have a few that crop up every now and then, and they’re quite familiar. Occasionally though, you recall one of those memories from a long time ago that you haven’t thought of in ages, and it *really* makes you smile. And with it come other memories. I had one of those the day I first
