A couple of weeks ago we had a party for a small group of friends, on a Saturday night. Nothing unusual about that you might think. Barrow Towers often plays host to an impromptu get together with friends. This party however was a bit different, a bit special. It was all part of HP (the printer people not the sauce people) and their Refer a Friend initiative Designed

Back to school with Letts Revision Guides
Now that my birthday is out of the way I can think about the whole “Back to School” campaign. I won’t think about it before my birthday, which falls slap bang in the middle of the summer holidays. In the same way that I won’t think about Christmas until after half term, despite retails clearing the shelves of weedkiller and solar lights to make way for “seasonal” treats. I sat

* * * * * * * * * * * * Last Friday was World Photo Day and if it showed us anything it’s that one photo can be so much more powerful than a lot of text. Of all the stories written about Syrian refugees the photo of a small boy lying drowned on a beach will remain with me forever, more so than anything I read.

World Photo Day
Is today. World Photo Day, whatever that means. I suppose I should look it up really. I haven’t had much time to get my thoughts down into blogs recently but I haven’t stopped taking photos. In fact I am taking more photos than ever and trying harder to think about the composition of them and not just rely on editing them. Though thank the lord for editing. I

Why I am not blogging about my kids
It has often struck me as odd that with a name like Mummy Barrow I don’t really feel I am a “mummy blogger”. I hate the phrase anyway. Much as I hate “working mother”. The media spit it out like it should be some kind of oxymoron. No man is ever referred to as a “working father” so why should we be singled out? I am digressing here.

One in three adults admitted into hospital are malnourished
Did you know that in many institutions, prisons for instance, there is a legislation that requires them to meet mandatory quality, nutritional and environmental standards on all food served*? Makes sense doesn’t it? That we ensure people who have no real say over the food they are served know that it is nutritionally balanced and is of good quality. There is no such legislation governing food served in hospitals. Over

Natural sunburn remedies
So having said I thought I was too old to sunbathe I rammed the point home by then spending a day on the beach and burning myself to a crisp. You see the problem is whilst I think that (and now know that if I am not too old I am just too stupid) you can’t really spend two weeks in the Caribbean and NOT spend a day on

Avoiding summer learning loss with education quizzes
There is no denying that the summer holidays are longed for. Needed. Glorious. Six weeks, in some cases nine. The last thing on most families mind’s is school work and whilst I don’t want to be a party pooper here, they are also very detrimental to a child’s learning. Studies have shown that the summer holidays can lead to a loss of what has been learned

Window Wednesday — Surfers Bar
Window Wednesday and we are in Barbados, at Surfers Bar It was sitting here in the living room in Barbados last year that I realised I had a bit of an obsession with photographing windows. As I scrolled through my camera and phone I had taken so many photographs that included the frame and the view through them I realised I was slightly addicted. And it was confirmed by

Family Food Planning
We are always busy. Sometimes I’m so busy it doesn’t seem possible to even start anything, so the list just gets longer. And longer. I’ve started trying a few things that seem to be helping for me – maybe they could for you too? I’m cooking a bit more, and before you say “but that takes longer” then hear me out…..I’m trying to cook a bit smarter. I used to do

Doing beaches the right way in Barbados
There are lots of beaches on Barbados. Ergo there are lots of ways to “do the beach”. Over on the Atlantic coast my advice would be to do the beach with caution as the waves are quite ferocious and it is not for weak swimmers but it is great if you are surfer. They also aren’t the most beautiful to look at though the scenery is spectacular

Frailty in old age is NOT inevitable
Seven years ago we moved my granny down from the area she called home to be nearer us. “Us” being my mum (her daughter) and dad, and the five of us. From Lancashire to Hampshire, a county completely new to her. And whilst GG (great grandma) had lived in Canada and worked in London for decades, Lancashire was where was born and where she returned thirty years
